Luke 1:13–17 • Malachi 4:4–6

The last words of the Hebrew Scriptures ache with hope.
Malachi closes with a simple, profound longing:
that God would turn the hearts of parents toward their children.
Not escape.
Not surrender to empire.
But a future shaped by love stronger than fear.
A future in which the next generation inherits something better than oppression.
This is how the Hebrew Bible ends—with a image of hope.
The Pattern: When the Faithful Speak, God Bends to Hear
In Malachi, those who revere YHWH gather and speak with one another.
They carry their fears, their longing, their wondering.
And Scripture says:
YHWH leans in to listen.
A scroll of remembrance is written.
God announces action.
And the Day comes.
But that “Day of YHWH” is not the same for everyone.
For those who trust God’s quiet help, the Day is sanctuary—light breaking through, healing rising with the “Sun of Alignment.”
For those who cling to power and twisting, the Day becomes a stumbling stone—their own violence crashing back upon them.
One God.
One Day.
Two different experiences, depending on the posture of the heart.
From Malachi to Zechariah: The Story Continues
Centuries later, an old priest named God-Remembers [Zechariah] steps into the temple.
Then a messenger appears with words that echo the very end of Malachi:
“Your son will go in the spirit of God-is-Yahweh-my-God [Elijah]—to turn hearts again.” (Luke 1:13–17)
The promise is unchanged:
God is healing the inner vision of the human family.
God is restoring our ability to imagine a future again.
God is turning hearts toward generations yet unseen.
Malachi’s hope is picked up, carried, and sung anew.
(So Zechariah will name his son a quote from Malachi: YHWH's-Compassion [John])
Advent: A Season of Lifted Eyes
Advent tells us:
When God draws near,
we do not shrink back in despair.
We lift our eyes.
We look toward the children.
Toward the ones who will carry the hope we plant today.
Toward the generation being prepared even now.
In a world that says,“Give up—this is all there is,”
Advent whispers:
“No—God is still turning hearts. God is still making a new creation. And the next generation is already being prepared for it.”
This is the promise of Malachi.
This is the song of Zechariah.
This is the hope of Advent:
God is healing the future by healing our hearts.
Grace and peace,
John
a scripture rendering from SAMC:
Luke 1: 11-20
A messenger of the Lord was seen by God-Remembers [Zechariah],
standing at the right side of the altar of incense.
And when he saw him, God-Remembers [Zechariah] was shaken,
and fear fell upon him.
But the messenger said to him:
“Do not be afraid, God-Remembers [Zechariah],
for your petition has been heard,
and your wife God-Promises [Elizabeth] will bear you a son,
and you shall call his name God's-Compassion [John].
There will be joy for you and exultation,
and many will rejoice at his birth.
For he will be great before the Lord,
and he shall never drink wine or strong drink,
and he will be filled with the Holy Breath
even from his mother’s womb.
And he will turn many of the sons of Struggles-With-God [Israel]
back toward the Lord their God.
And he will go before Him in the spirit and power of My-God-Is-Yah(weh) [Elijah],
to turn the hearts of fathers toward children,
and the disobedient toward the mindset of the aligned,
to prepare for the Lord a people made ready.”
MALACHI 3:16–24
Then those who revered YHWH spoke with one another,
and YHWH listened and heard.
A Scroll of Remembrance was written before Him
for those who revere YHWH
and for those who think upon His Name.
“They will be Mine,” says YHWH of Multitudes,
“on the day when I make them My Treasure.
And I will have compassion on them
just as a man has compassion
on his son who serves him.
Then you will return
and discern
between the Aligned and the Twisting,
between the one who serves God
and the one who does not serve Him.
For look—the Day is coming,
burning like a furnace.
All the arrogant ones
and all who do wickedness
will be like stubble.
The coming Day will burn them up,”
says YHWH of Armies,
“leaving them neither root nor branch.
But for you who revere My Name,
the Sun of Righteousness will rise
with healing in its wings.
You will go out
and leap like calves released from the stall.
You will trample the Twisting,
for they will be ash
beneath the soles of your feet
on the Day I am preparing,”
says YHWH of Armies.
“Remember the Lighted Direction of Moses My servant—
the statutes and the Justice-rulings
that I commanded him at Horeb
for all Israel.
Look—I am sending you Elijah the prophet
before the coming of the great and awesome Day of YHWH.
He will turn the heart of fathers toward children,
and the heart of children toward fathers,
lest I come
and strike the land
with utter destruction.”
